Hi there!    Welcome to ...

Step 4

There are 2 things

you need to ask yourself before you decide to register your own domain.

  • What do you want to use your web space for?
  • How much do you want to spend on a monthly and yearly basis?

So ...
WHAT'S YOUR WEB SPACE FOR?

  • Some people don't want a web site,
but just want a private domain name for email,
because they don't want to use a free email service
    like yahoo.com or hotmail.com

  • Some people just want to be able to display family stuff
    - like photos - to keep in touch with loved ones far away.

  • Some want to have a web site where they can simply display information.

  • Some want to offer a newsletter.

  • Some want to set up a business or offer an online service.

Next...
HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD TO SPEND?

If your expense account is little or nil, then you need to get a free site.

There are several places on the internet where this kind of service is offered.

To find these,
simply go to ask.com,
type in free web space,
and you'll get information on this subject.

There are just 2 hitches with this:

    • You don't own a domain name,
but instead your internet address looks something like this:
      www.mydomain.freesiteservice.com
    • Free services also put their own advertising on your web site.

If you have some money to spend, you can register your very own domain name (internet address) for prices between $10.00 and $35.00 US. (More about this later.)

Then, depending on what you want to do with your web space, you can buy internet facilities for your web site, which is called HOSTING.

If you simply want to have a private email address, or post a few photos with family news, or offer information, your need for internet facilities will be minimal.

    However,
  • if you want to give people a place on your web site to contact you with their information without divulging your email address (which can be very dangerous in these days of spamming),

  • or if you want to offer a newsletter,

  • or set up a business to accept Credit Card payments online,

  • then you need more serious hosting facilities, which will cost more depending on what your needs are.
